Asterosoma

Asterosoma. Bulbous to elliptical burrow chambers that are arranged along a central axial tube, somewhat like seed pods attached to a vine. The burrow chambers contain a radial backfill, called menisci, that form as the organism presses material into the burrow walls, yet tries to maintain an open burrow chamber of constant diameter.

Asterosoma Otto, 1854: Overview; Taxon description. Chamberlain, 1971. Description.-Preserved on bottom of thin bedded sandstone beds as convex hyporelief and as full relief within the beds. Individual burrows range from 15 to 30 mm in diameter and from 30 to 80 mm in length, and most are inclined to the bedding at approximately 25?. They are ...

The scarce and low diversity of palaeoichnocoenoses ... The end-Permian mass extinction resulted in the most dramatic degradation of marine bottom communities during the Phanerozoic. One result of this extinction was the long-recognized, extreme reduction in bioturbation of the Early Triassic seafloor. The above pictures are of sandstone beds from a quarry in North Arkansas developed in a rock formation called the Batesville Sandstone. Though it formed in a marine setting, the Batesville is typically composed of fairly homogeneous, flat-bedded rock with little evidence of inhabitation. This spot is an exception. The pictures clearly indicate…The ichnogenus Asteriacites von Schlotheim, 1820 is a common trace fossil with a global record from Cambrian (e.g. Crimes and Zhiwen, 1986) throughout the entire Phanerozoic (Fig. 1), and similar traces also occur in modern deposits (e.g. Schatz et al., 2013).It is an important constituent of marginal-marine and shallow-marine environments, but also occurs in the deep sea (Mikuláš, 1992).

Astartē is the Greek form of the deity's name, but the earliest form in the third millennium, Ashtart (from Aštarta ), ultimately reflects the feminine of Semitic Ashtar/Athtar, a Venus deity. The name of the goddess Ishtar also derives from Ashtar, but hers kept the masculine form without a -t ending, and she became the popular goddess of ...The Middle and Upper Jurassic succession in Saudi Arabia include the Dhruma, Tuwaiq Mountain, Hanifa, Jubaila, Arab and Hith formations (Bramkamp and Steineke, 1952; Steineke and Bramkamp, 1952; Powers, 1962, 1968).These formations carry different names in other Middle East countries that renders regional correlations and palaeoenvironmental interpretations difficult.Asterophoma. Source for information on Asterosoma: A Dictionary of Earth Sciences dictionary. The integrated analysis of sedimentology and ichnology is a powerful tool for discrimination among lithologically similar facies. Nutrient supply, substrate consistency, salinity, sedimentation rates, temperature, oxygenation and hydrodynamic regime all exert control on the types and behavior (ethology) of fauna in a given environment (e.g., Pemberton et al., 1992a, Pemberton et al., 1992b).The ichnoassociation represented by B. hemispherica , Thalassinoides suevicus , Spongeliomorpha isp., Asterosoma ludwigae and Rhizocorallium commune is dated from lowermost Pliensbachian by the ...Asterosoma is registered in a wide range of marine environments, ranging from paralic to deep-marine settings, usually under well-oxygenated conditions, being a component of the Cruziana ... May 14, 2015 · Asterosomas are actually trace fossils left behind by ancient marine animals (most likely worms or shrimp) that burrowed through mud in a delta or tidal-flat. This one was found in the Carboniferous section of north Arkansas and is roughly 300 million years old. These trace fossils are called Asterosoma because of their star-like shape. With an estimated species loss of more than 90 % in the marine realm (Raup 1979; Erwin 2006) and the most profound ecologic impact among all extinctions (McGhee et al. 2013), the end-Permian mass extinction (EPME) is widely recognized as the most devastating event in the history of metazoan life.Already since the mid-1990s, when …Marginal-marine facies, interpreted as lagoons, tidal flats and estuaries, are bioturbated, showing a typical brackish-water trace-fossil assemblage, including Asterosoma isp., Chondrites isp., Cylindrichnus concentricus, Teichichnus rectus, and Skolithos isp. Reservoir Quality: Asterosoma is a burrow with an active (mud-dominated) fill, which is less favorable for reservoir quality and fluid migration (La Croix et al. 2013; Knaust 2014a).Conostichus, Zoophycus, and Asterosoma are most commonly found in sandstone and siltstone of this region. Plant fossils are not abundant but are present in the sandstone, siltstone, and shale. Preserved footprints, also known as ichnites, are a type of trace fossil and a window into the lives of dinosaurs.
