Group velocity

The group velocity of a wave is the velocity with which the overall envelope shape of the wave's amplitudes—known as the modulation or envelope of the wave—propagates through space. Frequency dispersion in groups of gravity waves on the surface of deep water. The phase velocity, and the green circles propagate with the group velocity.

Group velocity. In the propagation of ultrashort pulses, group velocity mismatch often plays an important role. It can be taken into account in the software RP Fiber Power. Acronym: GVM. Definition: the phenomenon that pulses become temporally separated in a medium due to different group velocities, or (quantitatively) the difference of inverse group velocities.

Jan 28, 2016 · The phase velocity can be faster than light. Some argue that the phase velocity doesn't convey information, but this doesn't convince me. We can emit a wave of a single one frequency. Then it will move in the space, but the group velocity will be 0. We can convey information in the following way: 2Hz means 1, 1 Hz means 0.

The individual electron velocity in a metal wire is typically millions of kilometers per hour. In contrast, the drift velocity is typically only a few meters per hour while the signal velocity is a hundred million to a billion kilometers per hour. In general, the signal velocity is somewhat close to the speed of light in vacuum, the individual ...Derivation of Group Velocity Formula [edit | edit source] We now derive equation (1.36). It is easiest to do this for the simplest wave packets, namely those constructed out of the superposition of just two sine waves. We will proceed by adding two waves with full space and time dependence:This velocity is called the group velocity, since it’s the velocity of the envelope of a group (in this case, 2) of waves traveling together. The velocity of the envelope function given by equation 14 is v g=!"!k, [15] which, using equation 11 yields: v g=v o This agrees with our starting assumption the particle has a mean velocity of v o.
