Mnemonic instruction

Abstract. Mnemonic devices have been considered by some psychologists to represent a form of “unnatural learning” (Jenkins, 1971, 1974; Neisser, 1976, pp. 141–142). In response to these objections, it will be argued here that the study of mnemonic devices is fundamental to our understanding of human learning and the operation of human memory.

This chapter describes recent advances in mnemonic (memory enhancing) instruction with learning disabled populations. Particular emphasis is given to several long-term classroom interventions in which we have adapted classroom materials to incorporate the use of specific mnemonic strategies in the science and social studies areas.The extended branch mnemonics for the BC instruction require a base register; the extended mnemonics for the BCR and BRC instructions do not. The extended mnemonics for the BRC instruction begin with the letter "J", and are sometimes called "Jump" instructions, as indicated in Figure 1. Some typical extended mnemonic codes are given in Figure 1. The students also vary in their abilities.
