Carbonate platform

The vertical scale is given in two-way-time, the horizontal scale is in kilometer. The base of the carbonate platform is sealing most of the extensional tectonics before it was overthrusted by the Palawan-Borneo wedge (right). The "Red" unconformity is located well above the carbonate platform. So it is a post-rift-feature in the trough.

Carbonate platform. The platform is located at a junction area surrounded by Yinggehai basin, Qiongdongnan basin and Zhongjiannan basin. Well and regional geophysical data allow the identification of the morphologic and stratigraphic patterns. The Guangle carbonate platform was initiated on a tectonic uplift during the Early Miocene.

During the Holocene, carbonate platform weathering and erosion related to climate and precipitation intensified. Fresh water flowed through the reef body from seepage zone to the undercurrent zone, the unstable aragonite and high-Mg calcite of the reef body are weathered and eroded ( Wang et al., 2017 ).

Pelagic carbonate platforms (PCPs) are submarine highs that are drowned fragments of an ancestor regional peritidal carbonate platform. PCPs can be horsts or crests of rotated blocks. Aptian-Albian palaeoenvironments explored in four sections on the Constantine platform, NE Algeria, are identified based on lithology, sedimentary structures, fossil content and microfacies. A mixed unattached carbonate platform is characterised by lagoonal-reefal facies during the Aptian and clastic-carbonate hemipelagic facies during the Albian. The vertical microfacies trend shows a ...Abstract. The sedimentary record of ancient shallow-marine carbonate platforms commonly displays a stacking of different facies, which reflects repetitive changes of depositional environments through time. These changes can be induced by external factors such as cyclical changes in climate and/or sea level, but also by internal factors such as ...For example, in the Malampaya carbonate buildup (offshore Palawan), various stages of platform backstep are evidenced during the whole early Miocene interval and the 300 meter-thick carbonate succession consists exclusively of very shallow-water (euphotic) facies interrupted by repeated subaerial exposure surfaces (Fournier et al., 2005). A ...The carbonate platform upon the western margin of the Xisha Islands, rooted upon topographic highs, became partly submerged. The carbonate platform aggraded and backstepped in response to an overall transgression driven mainly by tectonic subsidence. During this period, small sags formed and ceased movement before carbonate production.ABSTRACT Many types of carbonate platforms have been described, from homoclinal ramps to rimmed shelves and a full spectrum of variations in between; the distinction between these different types can be problematic. Nevertheless, classification of carbonate platforms is not just a semantic or academic issue. For example, it is clearly important for the accurate interpretation of seismic images ...

The Late Jurassic extensional regime from the Neotethyan area favoured the development of a complex system of carbonate platforms (Missoni and Gawlick 2011).In this context, shallow-water carbonates were accumulating during Jurassic, on a large crustal block belonging to the Dacia Mega Unit (Schmid et al. 2008).The production of carbonate platforms fluctuated through time. Yet, the reasons for these fluctuations are not well understood, and the underlying mechanisms remain largely unconstrained. This discussion is supported by examples of subaerial disconformities from the Devonian, Carboniferous, and …

carbonate s. When this climate is arid then high rates of evaporation and the deposition of evaporites (either supratidal or subaqueous) are a common response. . Karstification of exposed carbonate platforms may occur during sea level lowstand by rainfall in humid regions (James andHowever, it is important to point out that sedimentation rates in carbonate platforms seemingly decrease with a scaling trend over an increasing interval of observation (Sadler, 1981;Enos, 1991 ...Carbonate platforms of extensional margins may be grouped into several major categories. The Cambrian Pedroche Formation comprises a mixed siliciclastic-carbonate succession recording subtidal deposition on a marine platform. Carbonate carbon isotope chemostratigraphy confirms previous biostratigraphic assignment of the Pedroche Formation to the Atdabanian regional stage of Siberia, correlative to Cambrian Series 2.

During the E-C transition, the Yangtze Block evolved from a rift basin to a passive continental margin basin (Wang and Li, 2003), most of which accommodated the carbonate platform, surrounded by narrow marginal transitional zones to the north (~ 800 km long) and south-to-southwest (> 1600 km long), along which shallow-water carbonates sharply change facies basinwards into black chert-shale ...The Upper Devonian on the offshore carbonate platform setting consists mainly of massive algal, bioclastic, and oolitic limestone (Rongxian Formation), whereas in the intraplatform basin setting, it is composed of either thin to medium bedded limestone intercalated with cherty bands (Gubi Formation) or siliceous rock (Liujiang Formation) in …Platforms. Carbonate platforms are areas of shallow submarine accumulation of carbonate sediment that vary based on several factors: sediment production, sediment supply/proximity to a continental landmass, existing topography, sea level oscillations, and ramp morphology/slope (Harris, 1986; Fig. 1).
