City block factorio. Generally, you want a block that's just big enough for your largest train size. The other question about block size is how much usable area there is within a block. You can have too much space, such that you consume so many resources that your current train length simply cannot effectively feed that block.

The numbers commonly used around here are to describe the number of locomotives and wagons in a train. It goes as : front_locomotives - cargo_wagons - rear_locomotives. So, for your 1-4-1 example, it means a train with one locomotive facing either way, and 4 cargo wagons in between.
