I get the sense that this is stemming from this new advice some DO schools are throwing out to not take Step 1 because it's unscored.Just be aware that many derm programs specify whether they allow physicians (PGY's) to apply or whether they only allow MS4's to apply. I looked into this option too because I was also considering this route, but it turns out there are far less programs you can apply to as a PGY-1 (or beyond).

I know a dermatology resident at my home institution who matched directly out of med school with a Step 1 score of 223.The game right now is low quality volume on your cv. Desperately needs to change to emphasize a few high quality publications, and being first or second author or 2+ in a high impact journal. Having more than 15 in derm specific pubs/abstracts just feels super dirty and at baseline I wouldn’t trust that person. But it is what it is.I've been recommending to everyone this whole year to ignore the APD guidelines, and do what is best for your application.
