Groundwater in water cycle. The water cycle is the endless process that connects all of that water. It joins the Earth’s oceans, land, and atmosphere. The Earth’s water cycle began about 3.8 billion years ago when rain fell on a cooling Earth, forming the oceans. The rain came from water vapor that escaped the magma in the Earth’s molten core into the atmosphere.

There are three basic locations of water storage that occur in the planetary water cycle. Water is stored in the atmosphere; water is stored on the surface of the earth, and water stored in the ground. Water stored in the atmosphere can be moved relatively quickly from one part of the planet to another part of the planet.
