The Promise of American Life is a book published by Herbert Croly, founder of The New Republic, in 1909. This book opposed aggressive unionization and supported economic planning to raise general quality of life. By Croly's death in 1930, only 7,500 copies of The Promise of American Life had been sold.

Introduction. In his 1914 book, Progressive Democracy, Herbert Croly continued to discuss many of the themes first articulated in The Promise of American Life. In this later work, however, Croly increasingly turned his attention toward mechanisms of direct democracy as part of his remedy for the challenges of modern, industrial America.

Croly, like most Progressives, was convinced that only a public-spirited, disinterested elite, guided by scientific principles, could restore the promise of American life.
