Kansas limestone. The "newest" and perhaps the most unusual building limestone in Kansas is the "Chestnut Shell limestone." Despite the fact that the stone was used locally as early as 1870, it was only recently quarried on a commercial scale. This unique stone is known only in northeastern Pottawatomie County where a two-foot ledge near Wheaton is quarried.
