Nope, you can hunt all monsters in MHGU without any DLC. There are pieces of equipment that are DLC quest rewards, but not monster species. All the DLC is free though, and it doesn't take up much space, so I don't see any reason not to download it. It also has mountains of free items to help streamline the game.
