Montezuma national wildlife refuge

A number of years ago, we both did volunteer work for Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge in upstate New York (located on Routes 5 & 20 between Rte 89 and Rte 90; 12 miles W of Auburn); an outstanding place to see waterfowl, shorebirds, and eagles; spring and fall migration periods are particularly good times to visit.

Montezuma national wildlife refuge. Formed around 10,000 years ago when a mile-high glacier scraped and gouged as it retreated north, Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge is a critical habitat in the New York Fingers Lakes region. One of the first prominent settlers in the area, Dr. Peter Clark, built a home on a hill and named it Montezuma as a nod to the Aztec emperor, Montezuma.

The osprey platform is located in a marsh on the Montezuma Wildlife Refuge about two miles from the Visitor Center. A single coaxial cable about 1500 feet long connects the camera which is mounted above the platform to a transmitter which is mounted some 65 feet up in a tree that has a clear view of the visitor center.

Today, Curu National Wildlife Refuge protects 75% of its 3,697 acres (1,496 hectares) as pristine forest. The remaining 20% is used for farming/ranching, while 5% makes up the reserve’s hiking trails and visitors center. A Variety of Habitats.
