Dec 3, 2020 · The literature on patent citations is vast, and numerous studies have been conducted on different aspects, e.g., ethnicity [11, 12], social networks , geographic proximity [14, 15] and so on. Instead, in this paper we aim to study the patent citation network from the perspective of citation forming mechanisms and the factors that influence them.
The use of patent citation data in social science research has exploded in the last two decades. As just one indication, the frequency of appearance of the term “patent citation” in scientific documents listed in Google Scholar increased 10-fold between 2000 and 2014 (Appendix A).
