Make a 2x2 room around it out of some kind of brick until you're ready to switch to geothermal. When you do switch to geothermal, use brick and leave a 1 block gap around the generator or vent it. I've lost a few early colonies to geothermal, and I've saved a few colonies with geothermal.Geothermal generators are still far better, since they require no maintanence like growing crops and can be walled off far from your base.
